A dental implant is essentially a substitute for a natural root and commonly it is screw or cylinder shaped. Each implant is placed into a socket carefully at the precise location of the intended tooth. Often the implant can be placed at the same time as removal of the tooth (if required), all on the same day.

Dental implants are stronger and more durable than their restorative counterparts (bridges and dentures). Implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. Additionally, implants may be used in conjunction with other restorative procedures for maximum effectiveness. For example, a single implant can serve to support a dental crown replacing a single missing tooth.

Sinus Lift

Before an implant can be placed, some patients will require surgical preparation in the upper jaw to ensure there is enough bone tissue into which the implant can be secured.

When the upper jaw has had no teeth for some time, the bone and surrounding tissues begin to disappear. If this occurs, there may not be sufficient levels of dense bone to place an implant. Fortunately, science has advanced a great deal in this area and one solution is to perform a sinus lift.

A sinus lift is an oral surgical procedure that extends into the sinus cavity above the jaw and packs bone graft material into this space. This graft material will be incorporated by the surrounding bone and form a solid structure very similar to bone. After a waiting period, the site will be checked and once an adequate bone density level is achieved your implant will be ready to be placed.

How do I clean them?
You should clean your implants the same way you would clean your natural teeth. The dentist will show you how to clean around the implant thoroughly and you may need to see your hygienist regularly to maintain the implants.
How long will implants last?
Dental implants, like teeth, can last a lifetime and depend on how good your oral health and diet is. If you develop gum disease the implants may become loose and eventually fail – just like normal teeth.
Are implants dangerous to health?
No. You look after implants the same way as you do natural teeth, and this means regular brushing, flossing and routine visits to your dentist and hygienists to get your teeth checked. Taking care of all your teeth minimises the risk of plaque build up and infection.
Can anyone have implants?
Being able to have implants is primarily reliant on the condition of the bone in your jaw. It needs to be strong – and you need to have enough of it – so it can take the titanium screw. Part of your implant consultation starts with a CT scan which will check on your bone density around your jaw.
How long will the procedure take?
Your implant surgeon will be able to give you a treatment plan for your procedure. Your bone has to fuse to the new implant before a bridge or new tooth can be placed on it, you will have a temporary tooth, bridge or denture fitted as part of the procedure. The upper jaw takes approximately 4-6 months and the lower jaw up to 4 months. These are only estimated times and your implant surgeon will be able to give you a definite diagnosis.
